Few people think of nutrition when they are sick, unless we’re talking about Jewish mothers nagging you to have some chicken soup. The fact is that they are onto something. Your body absolutely screams for nutrition when you are sick with the flu or any other illness. This is because illnesses create a drain on the body. Plus, your body needs certain nutrients to fight the sickness.

What do you need?

In no particular order, here are some helpful nutrients:

  • Calcium, because calcium stimulates white blood cell response to fight off the infection; and calcium is needed to get rid of fevers
  • Electrolytes: These are minerals that carry electrical charges and keep up your energy and hydration along with:
  • Water: dehydration is common with colds and flu, especially as the body tends to try to filter blood and body fluids through the kidneys
  • Antioxidants: This is a broad category, but includes many super foods, including green tea, grape seed extract and astragalus, to name a few

Helpful Supplements? (from our online store)

  • CalMag Balance: great source of calcium lactate
  • Ultimate Defense: excellent source of powerful herbs
  • ImmuneSupport: fantastic source of foods and herbs to support immune system
  • SuperGreens PhytoFood: terrific source of super foods, minerals, electrolytes and vitamins
  • FlavoC: great source of vitamin C, echinacea and bioflavonoids

Worse Things To Eat

These are the worst things to consume when you are sick, because they hinder your body’s attempts to get well and fight off disease and infection:

  • Sugar: all kinds, from table sugar to foods containing sugar as an ingredient
  • Soft drinks: due to their high sugar and artificial ingredients
  • Fast foods and all junk foods
  • Table Salt (use Celtic sea salt instead) because table salt is a refined product that is toxic
  • Fluoride and chlorine: because these heavy metals crowd out iodine which is needed for biochemical functions
  • Bad oils, trans fats and fried foods
