Is Your Mind Hurting Your Back?
by Vic Shayne, PhD
Can your mind be holding back your back? Before you say this is some strange New Age concept, consider the fact that mainstream psychologists are seeing the connection in many cases between physical ailments and the way our emotions and minds affect nerve pathways.
Let’s break down this idea into short, simple sentences. You have stress. You get tense. Your body tenses up. If you make a habit of this, your body reacts like Pavlov’s dog to emotional stress.
If you have back problems, do you hold your stress in your back muscles? It’s a question worth exploring if nothing else seems to help. Of course there is a physical reality that manifests in pain, cramping, tightness, aches and weaknesses. There is no denying this reality. But the main idea is that these manifestations may be the result of the way your emotions are affecting nerve pathways into your back.
The connection between the mind and body can result not only in chronic back problems, but also easy susceptibility to back injuries when working in the yard, lifting weights, working at your desk, or even tying your shoes.

Very often, calcium can help alleviate the cramping that is associated with back problems due to muscular strain and injury.
Certainly all of this is true of other parts of the body, so why not the back muscles? Consider that doctors have long understood that stress can lead to heart problems, stomach ulcers, bowel problems and headaches. These are similar cause-and-effect siutations involving the mind, emotions and physical body.
Thus, if this is your particular situation, all the pain killers, acupuncture, Ben-Gay, Advil and muscle relaxants will never resolve the issue. Something to think about.
Supplementation
One of the most painful aspects of back problems may be cramping, for which calcium lactate (CalMag Balance) may be indicated by your doctor. In addition, another supportive supplement, along with your doctor’s choice of treatment, is ProMin Complex.
