I’m Sick of these Same Four Walls: Toxic Drywall Warning

Day 6: Steve gets muddy.

Walls in homes, offices and just about every other modern building are made from a material called drywall. Over the past several years, a lot of people have become sick from the fumes being released from their walls. At first the problem was blamed on drywall imported from China, but further investigation shows that US-made drywall is causing the same problems.

The main problem is not coming directly from drywall, but rather the corrosion it causes when coming into contact with pipes and wires behind the walls. The sulfur within the drywall starts the corrosion process.

A CBS News report stated, “The damage being blamed on defective drywall is ugly: corroded copper coil, electrical wires eaten away and a noxious odor fouling the air. Health complaints range from itchy eyes to headaches and bloody noses to breathing problems.”

More than a thousand people have been affected across more than thirty states.

The moral of the story is that if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms and can’t find a “normal” reason, and the problems coincide with moving into a new house or new installation of drywall, this is something to consider.
