Health Tip #9: Massage Your Toes
When you think of a massage, rarely do your toes come to mind first. But the fact is that our feet are among the most stressed-out parts of our bodies. Being far away from the rest of the action going on inside your head and stomach, the toes are apt to be neglected, which just isn’t good for a number of reasons. So massage your toes at least three times a week, preferably in the middle, or at the end of, the day.
Health benefits of toe massaging:
- increased circulation
- invigorating internal organs (reflexology)
- releasing of tension
- decreasing cramping
- stretching tendons and ligaments
How to do it.
To massage your toes properly, take off your shoes. If you use lotion, you should also remove your socks and any rings or bells you may have encompassing your digits. Using lotion OVER the socks may result in having your shoes slide off your feet and hitting a pedestrian. Then turn the lights down low, put on some soft music and go to town. And don’t worry about turning the lights down too low, because your toes are in the dark most of the time anyway, which is one of the reasons why you need to let them out and wiggle free. Massage therapists say that if you don’t have time to massage all of your feet, then start with all your toes then massage the balls of your feet because these areas contain the most nerve endings. Reflexologists claim that the feet contain nerves that correlate to other parts of your body and that by giving your toes and feet a good going-over you will, in turn, invigorate your major organs.
Precautions: Ticklishness Can Be a Hazard
When massaging toes simultaneously with a partner be careful that this activity does not lead to excessive, out of control laughter that may result in a candle being kicked over that could result in a lot of explaining to do to the fire rescue team breaking down your door.
