Health Tip #6: Take a Hike
Exercise is good for you, but you don’t have to do it “their way.” Too many people join a gym or some other organized institution for exercise and then quit after a few visits. The problem is that exercise, with all the flashy clothes, celebrity DVDs, home equipment and grandmas in boxing gloves, has become way too overblown and complicated. Doesn’t have to be this way, bringing us to today’s Health Tip:
Take a hike!
The easiest form of exercise doesn’t require expensive shoes, a mail-order machine or a giant ball that takes up half your closet. The easiest form of exercise has been around since the beginning of time: WALKING. If you have a trail, go for a hike. But if you don’t just put on some comfortable shoes, a hat and walk out your front door. Walk for a half a mile, or more, then come back home. Take your son or daughter with you. Or your spouse. Or your neighbor. If you haven’t done this, chances are that you will love it!! Take a hike.
If you have medical concerns, get a physical from your doctor then have him/her approve your walking schedule.
The American Academy of Family Physicians says: Walking is considered one of the best choices because it’s easy, safe and inexpensive. Brisk walking can burn as many calories as running, but is less likely than running or jogging to cause injuries. Walking is an aerobic and weight-bearing exercise, so it is good for your heart and helps prevent osteoporosis.
