Health Question: Whole Food Supplements: Hype or Health?
Q: I’m confused by the use of the term “whole food” to describe your supplements. It cannot be possible to put actual food–at least in any appreciable amount–into a tablet or capsule, so why do companies like Standard Process and NutriPlex Formulas use the words “whole” and “food” to describe their supplements?
Catherine C.
A: Thanks for your intelligent question. First, we don’t consider what we do “hype.” In fact, we are a very small organization, as is NutriPlex Formulas, not getting rich by any means. Yet, in contrast, there are many companies that misuse the term “whole food,” including Standard Process Labs. Here’s why: A whole food supplement is supposed to mean a supplement that contains all foods. Standard Process uses foods PLUS isolated vitamins and minerals (which are not foods, but rather fractions of foods), which makes them hypocritical in their claims. NutriPlex Formulas, on the other hand, does not mix fractions in with their foods. Just read the labels and product information to see the difference. For instance, these are not foods, but rather isolated substances: niacinamide, niacin, zinc chelate, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene, etc. Standard Process and other so-called whole food companies add these to their foods as isolates. NutriPlex Formulas does not. Instead, NutriPlex incorporates the foods which contain only naturally occurring amounts of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc.
We believe that nature holds the secret to health and healing and does not need any artificial help to achieve this within the human organism.
Another important point to remember is that whole foods contain myriad nutrients not found in other supplements. This is because nature is complex. And, nutrients are complex; there is complexity to vitamin structures, for instance. For a full discussion of this, consider Dr. Shayne’s book, Man Cannot Live on Vitamins Alone: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0595236545/sr=8-1/qid=1141061273/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8606846-4612028?%5Fencoding=UTF8
Real, whole foods contain substances such as terpenes, flavors, pigments, chlorophyll, flavonoids, carotenoids, etc., which are not in vitamin pills.
Next, you would be correct in claiming that it is better to just eat whole foods than to take supplements containing whole foods. This is becaue NO supplement should take the place of eating real foods in the diet. HOWEVER, most people either don’t eat real foods in their diets, or they are very deficient in certain types of nutrients that are contained within foods that they wouldn’t eat in their diets. Two good examples among many include acerola cherry and liver.
It is true that there are small amounts of foods within supplements, but it is also true that the body’s requirements are not as demanding as you would think. Just a small amounts of a whole food vitamin complex can do wonders for health, healing and prevention. This runs contrary to the extraordinary claims calling for high dosages of vitamins or minerals by supplement companies and nutrition-oriented practitioners. In my practice I have seen amazing results achieved with the use of NutriPlex Formulas’ whole food supplements, including healing skin, overcoming chronic fatigue and depression and anxiety, shrinking liver cancer tumors, improving eyesight, eliminating PMS and menstrual problems, adding energy and adding mobility and lifestyle to arthritis patients.
One of the biggest problems with so-called “natural” health care is that most practitioners have simply adopted the same paradigm as the allopathic community. That is, they have used the reductionist attitude and applied it to natural health care. As such, they use herbs and vitamins just as a medical doctor would use a drug. They employ high dosages of fractions to health problems to achieve a result. This always leads to side effects, because this is not a natural way to address the body. On the other hand, foods take a longer time to heal, but there are rarely side effects.
Ultimately, a person desiring optimal health will not only take whole food supplements, but he/she will also adopt a new lifestyle and daily diet that does not compromise his/her health or chances for healing. We live in a world of fast food, junk food, marketing hype, modern medicie and toxicity. These factors, in my experience, have created a need for NutriPlex’s whole food formulas.
