Health Question: Psoriasis

Q: My husband has a bad case of Psoriases. He has gone to several doctors with no results. Can you help with this problem? —
M. B.

A: Psoriasis is a complicated condition. Many researchers have pointed to a nutritional imbalance that should be addressed by:
1. Readjusting the types of fats eaten (needed fats) versus those that should not be eaten (bad fats)
2. Supplying food-based vitamin A COMPLEX (not vitamin A palmitate, but instead vitamin A from food such as liver, raw milk, etc.)
3. Providing healing nutrients known to support the skin.

Of course, our philosophy is to always use NutriPlex Formulas’ whole food products and NOT vitamin or mineral pills. There is a huge difference. Foods are recognized by the body for their complexity and naturally existing “dosages” of nutrients. On the other hand, vitamin pills (this includes vitamins that are mixed in with foods, which is a common practice among many companies).

Here is the protocol we use to supply nutrients, regardless of whether the patient is being treated by a medical doctor for this condition:
1. Go on the Alkaline Diet (we have this available for the asking)
2. 6 CodLiver capsules per day
3. 2teaspoons of raw organic coconut butter per day (this can be spread on toast, etc.)
4. 8 CalMag Balance per day
5. 6 ImmuneSupport per day
6. 2T SuperGreens PhytoFood per day (mixed in any kind of juice)
7. Dietary restrictions: this is covered in the Alkaline Diet, but it especially emphasizes the fact that these foods MUST BE ELIMINATED IMMEDIATELY AND ENTIRELY from the daily diet: all transfats, all types of refined sugar (sucrose, glucose, mannitose, corn syrup, fructose, high fructose, grape sugar, etc.), all artificial ingredients, MSG, all pasteurized dairy (for cheese switch to RAW, ORGANIC cheese, cooked cheese, canola oil, all snack chips, cookies, fried foods, roasted nuts, peanut butter, margarine, fake butters & spreads, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.
8. Sit only on leather or vinyl furniture that is constantly cleaned. Bed linens must be constantly cleaned.
9. Switch to environmentally friendly laundry soaps ONLY. Seventh Generation is one good brand, but there are others.
10. Switch to environmentally friendly, non synthetic soap for bathing. You may use the NEEM Soap we sell, or Dr. Bronner’s brand lavender soap.
11. Filter all drinking water and bathing water. Water is known to have harsh chemicals and heavy metals that include chlorine and fluoride, which are harmful to the body.
12. Give this program at least 6 months to see if there are results. Psoriasis goes through waves of remission, and the human body must be fed the nutrients mentioned herein on a regular basis to build health. Immediate results are not realistic, but building health is a process.
13. Lastly, many patients find relief by going on a once a month enema program that includes organic coffee enemas. Why? Because the coffee stimulates the gallbladder to rid the liver of toxins.
14. Other helpful nutrients you may add include VitaLiv at 6 per day and BFood Complex at 8 per day.

Psoriasis
— a systemic condition

Vic Shayne, Ph.D.

Psoriasis is a condition which medical doctors describe as having no known cause and no known cure. The condition is a “chronic, recurrent disease characterized by dry, well-circumscribed, silvery, scaling papules and plaques of various sizes.” (Merck Manual, 1992; p.2435). Medical text describe the thick scaling as “probably due to increased epidermal cell proliferation…Onset is usually between ages 10 and 40, but no age is exempt…Onset is usually gradual. The typical course is one of chronic remissions and recurrences (or occasionally acute exacerbations) that vary in frequency and duration.” (Merck, p. 2435).

Often, eruptions are precipitated by local trauma, and occasionally, severe sunburn, irritation, topical drugs, chloroqine antimalarial therapy, lithium, beta blockers, interferon and withdrawal of systemic corticosteroids.

Diagnosis by inspection is rarely difficult, but psoriasis may be confused with seborrheic dermatitis and other skin problems.

Medical Treatment of psoriasis.
According to medical literature, complete remission is rare, and the problem is at best controllable. Usually psoriasis is addressed medically with ultraviolet light rays and topical coal tar or corticosteroid creams/ointments; and internally with drugs such as methotrexate. At best, remissions result for a brief period before flare-ups resume.

NATURAL HEALTHCARE
In some schools of thought, psoriasis is regarded as an excess proliferation of skin cells. Psoriasis is a systemic disease, meaning that it is system-wide (resulting from a biochemical imbalance throughout the internal as well as external systems of the body). Although the disease is not treated, per se, the body is fed specific nutrients known to benefit the skin tissues from the inside out. Vitamins A and C are extremely important to the health of skin tissues, soft tissues, protective layers and linings inside and outside the body, and health of the liver. The liver, as a vitamin A and zinc organ, is instrumental in skin health. “Green” phyto (plant) nutrients of an alkaline ash variety are very helpful in supplying needed minerals supportive of the skin, hormonal system, lymphatic system, liver function and removal of wastes. B vitamins in a whole food complex form and calcium are helpful in supporting all internal organs in repair and maintenance. Also of known benefit to the body and skin are essential fats/oils. Therefore, cod liver oil, possessing vitamin A, essential oils and minerals, is helpful. When an imbalance of fats exists, due to a diet that is deficient or deprived of specific “good” oils and fats, the condition of the skin suffers. Flaking and itching is often the result.

It is also helpful to avoid irritating toxins, including fluoride and chlorine (in drinking water and bathing water), chemicalized soaps, harsh detergents used on clothes and linens, refined sugars, refined foods and “bad” oils such as fried oils, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, and processed oils which have been heated (including fries, potato chips, roasted nuts, etc.)

The skin, especially from the inside-out, takes time to heal on a nutritional schedule designed to feed nutrients into the body. Therefore, six months to a year may be necessary to follow a strict supplement and lifestyle regime. The nutritional schedule must include not only supplementation, but also healthy dietary and environmental standards.
