WHAT WORLD WILL YOU LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN and children’s children?

Sometimes you have to state the obvious. We are tied to our planet in more ways than we know. The health of the environment is crucial not only to our existence, but also to our daily state of health. There are tens of thousands of new toxic chemicals released into the marketplace every year to add to the existing millions of chemicals in our environment that our bodies have no way of handling. The accumulation of these poisons take their toll on our health and cause cancer, skin problems, respiratory ailments, liver disease and many other problems.

Now we are at a crucial junction in the history of the world. We literally are standing on the threshold of possible planetary destruction, which would lead to the destruction of life. This means that we may be leaving NOTHING — ABSOLUTELY NO FUTURE — for our children and grandchildren. Or, we can ACT NOW and turn things around. But this will take a conscious, concerted effort that will have to fly in the face of the current political, destructive, wasteful forces that now control the direction of the health of our planet. The Bush administration and its friends have legalized toxic dumping and have promoted the use of oil and nuclear fuels. They said at the outset of the 2000 presidential election that global warming does not exist. This is a lie; and they know they are lying. But now even some of the more radical among them are admitting we have a problem.

If you drive an SUV, unnecessarily use electricity, don’t downsize your vehicle, don’t recycle and let your political views get in the way of saving our planet, then you are part of the problem. There is no nice way to say this. None of us is perfect, but once we are made aware of what we are doing, we have to take responsibility and stop doing it!

Al Gore has done it again. Yes, he did help invent and launch the Internet, but now he’s on to bigger and better things. Gore has been an ardent environmentalist before this was every popular. He and his associates predicted the problems that we are having today way back in the 1970s. His recent movie and book, An Inconvenient Truth, is instrumental to the understanding of the scope of our global warming problem.

President Clinton recently launched the Clinton Global Initiative. This is a fantastic, promising movement that involves BILLIONAIRES who have the power and money to make a difference. Clinton has crossed political lines and engaged power brokers to sign on the dotted lineAfter allll, clean air, water and land is not a matter of political reality; it is a biological reality.

Movie stars and celebrities are investing their time, dollars and energy into saving our planet. These people are rich, but they drive cars that the rest of us can afford.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Larry David, who recently gave away his hybrid Prius in a promotional contest, says, “The virtual march is a perfect opportunity for the lazy man to do something good without having to expend any effort. This thing was made for me.” and his wonderful, dedicated (to global health, not necessarily him; well, maybe),
Laurie David, Daryl Hannah, Tim Robbins, Ed Begley, Jr. (“As environmental issues become more pressing, there are two possible responses: forget it and hope that government and corporations will figure it out, or take action yourself.”), and others are leading the way. Read about what these people are doing; it’s inspiring.

Robert Kennedy, Jr., lawyer, writer and environmentalist, has this to say, “Our generation faces the greatest moral and political crisis in human history. Will we take the steps necessary to avert catastrophic global warming or will we doom our children to a new Dark Ages in a world that is biologically and economically impoverished and defined by ever diminishing quality of life. According to the grimmest forecasts, extreme global warming could give us a future where erratic and chaotic weather, rising sea levels, and melting snowpack usher in an epic of drought, crop failure, famine, flood and mass extinctions — and the political instability that invariably accompanies dwindling resources. Millions of environmental refugees uprooted by these calamities will challenge the existence of democracy, freedom, justice and human dignity in every corner of the globe. Our grandchildren may look longingly at our era as the apex of civilization and human progress.” Read Kennedy’s Rolling Stone article.

Some of this country’s leading environmentalists aren’t so high-profile, but they are working hard to save YOUR family and OUR families and OUR planet. One man, Graham Hill, Boulder, CO, is doing an amazing job. Graham has been at this long before most of us ever heard the term global warming. He’s a promoter of sensible, sustainable transportation, electric vehicles and more. His is both a local and nationwide concern.

David Suzuki is another hero. He’s a scientist who has a grasp on reality but a never-ending positive attitude. He has hope and his books and videos are a gift to mankind. “Since 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has worked to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us. Focusing on four program areas – oceans and sustainable fishing, climate change and clean energy, sustainability, and the Nature Challenge – the Foundation uses science and education to promote solutions that conserve nature and help achieve sustainability within a generation.”

CALL TO ACTION: YOU CAN DO IT NOW!
I could inundate you with facts and figures about global warming, soaring cancer rates, pollution and the slow death of our planet. I did a lot of this in my book, Evil Genius in the Garden of Eden. But, let’s move beyond this. I’d rather call for action. You and your family can do something NOW and start making a difference. If you fail to act, then you have no conscience. Pure and simple.

This is not an issue to avoid. It is not a political issue, it is a BIOLOGICAL one. As you read this, our polar ice caps are melting, causing a worldwide over-heating of our environment. This is not a natural occurrence, but a man-made one. Don’t let the big corporations and politicians destroy the world. Enough is enough. Do it for your children and your children’s children. What kind of legacy will you leave?
