Colds, Flu, Viruses & Nutrition
by Vic Shayne, PhD
Of all the health problems, almost everyone can relate to the suffering from a cold or flu. But to many natural health care doctors, the general public has been greatly misled about the origins of colds and flu. Most often they are blamed on viruses and bacteria, so much so that we are quick to say “I must have caught a bug or a virus” than we are to consider the real reasons behind most colds and flu. These reasons are: inadequate nutrition, toxins, exposure to radical temperature changes and food poisoning. For all of these problems, the symptoms are all the same — familiar to all of us — and include one or more of the following: sneezing, runny nose, fever, aches in the joints and bones, respiratory problems, increased mucous and sinus pressure and even headaches. So the next time you have a cold or flu, remember that there are many things you can do to prevent (See Prevention) sickness and that “catching” a cold is not a likely scenario.

With an especially stubborn flu, many have successfully followed a purified water enema flush with another few enemas of organic coffee which may dispel toxins from the body. This has worked well in even severe colds and flu. Just make sure that you are up to the task, as this process can be a bit of a drain on your energy reserves.
What makes people SICK with colds and flu?
Most doctors claim that viruses and bacteria cause illness, but let’s examine the issue even closer by asking why some people get sick and others do not. Many natural healthcare doctors feel that a cold or flu is not something that you “catch,” but rather a breakdown of the body’s natural defense mechanisms which protect us from sickness. Many of the so-called instances of colds are frequently due to a toxic assault on the body. Consider that the body may respond to toxic overload with these symptoms: headache, fever, rapid heartbeat, cold sweats, runny nose, loss of energy, drowsiness, miserable feeling, inability to think clearly and problems with the bowels and kidneys. When the body is exposed to toxic overload, it attempts to expel poisons and creates such symptoms.
Perhaps we are overlooking the fact that in order to get sick, our bodies become vulnerable, with our immune system failing to defend us from foreign, exogenous (outside) invaders and inadequate diets.
These invaders and dietary ingredients include:
• Extreme temperatures that shock our bodies (cold and hot, damp and dry weather)
• Pollutants (smoke, pesticides, vapors, degassing plastics, paint fumes, sprays, etc.)
• Artificial ingredients in foods such as emulsifiers, fake fats, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, food chemicals)
• Altered foods such as refined sugars, altered fats (hydrogenated, fried, roasted and partially hydrogenated) and oils
• Vitamin, mineral and other nutrient deficiencies caused by insufficient and nutrient-depleting diets
• Toxins in foods (pesticide, fertilizer and herbacide residues as well as artificial ingredients)
• Poisons that enter our skin (personal care products with dangerous ingredients, gasoline, pesticides, sprays, etc.)
• Spoiled and infested foods
• Poor sanitation and unclean personal habits
• Poor, altered or bad oils and fats
Young children in day care and elementary school as well as office workers frequently get sick due to exposure to cleaning (and disinfectant) chemicals, improper clothing to protect from the cold, and inadequate diets full of refined sugars which deplete the adrenals and demineralize the body of protective nutrients such as calcium and vitamin B.
Needed most in such cases are:
1. avoidance of toxins in the environment and the diet;
2. increase in food-source vitamin B, vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants; and
3. a clean diet of real, whole, raw foods that are filled with life-supporting enzymes and unaltered “good” fats and proteins
4. severe illness, including prolonged headache, have been known to respond quickly to thorough enemas with purified water followed by organic coffee (due to the beneficial action on liver and gallbladder)
